Premier of Film “Chasing Jimmy” Plays in Caseville.

The Bay Theater was buzzing with excitement as a full house eagerly awaited the premiere of the local documentary, “Chasing Jimmy”. The man behind the film is Bob Brown, a Sand Point resident who wears several hats; he’s the writer, producer, director, and also the executive producer and managing partner at Charity Island Pictures, LLC.

Brown’s documentary is the captivating tale of his attempt to get tropical folk singer Jimmy Buffet to attend the annual Cheeseburger in Paradise festival that’s celebrated every August in Caseville. One memorable scene even features Brown braving to ring the doorbell at Buffett’s Florida residence and another has him tracking down Buffett’s boat at a marina.

The inspiration for Chasing Jimmy partly came from other documentaries where the filmmaker embarks on a quest to find someone. The 1989 film “Roger and Me” by Michael Moore is one such example that Brown cites.

Since its premiere, Chasing Jimmy has been making waves across the country, catching the eyes of Buffett fan clubs and Florida Keys communities. You can even find a Facebook page dedicated to the same cause – getting Jimmy Buffet to Caseville. The documentary is set to be released on DVD in August.

In other news, it’s interesting to remember the time Michigan used to offer tax credits to filmmakers to stimulate local production. That period might be over, but we now have some timeless films with familiar locations. Also, while not directly related to our Jimmy Buffet chase, there are some other issues of note like the state of commercial fishing and the future of beer amidst global energy concerns.
