Fatal Head-On Crash Shuts Down US-131 in Montcalm County

MONTCALM COUNTY, Mich. – A wrong-way driver caused a deadly head-on collision on US-131 near Kendaville Road on Thursday afternoon, prompting a major highway closure and ongoing investigation by the Michigan State Police (MSP) Lakeview Post.

71-Year-Old Driver Entered US-131 in the Wrong Direction

The crash occurred around 3:40 p.m., when a 71-year-old man from Newaygo entered the northbound lanes of US-131 traveling southbound at a high rate of speed. He struck a vehicle occupied by a 50-year-old woman from Grand Rapids and her 11-year-old son head-on, causing severe injuries to all involved.

Driver Succumbs to Injuries, Others Hospitalized

Emergency responders transported the male driver to the hospital, where he passed away from his injuries. The female driver and her son were also hospitalized, though their injuries were described as serious but non-life-threatening.

Speed a Factor in Deadly Collision

Authorities have confirmed that speed played a role in the crash, though the full circumstances remain under investigation. MSP Lakeview Post troopers continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses to determine additional factors.

Road Closure and Alternate Routes Advised

US-131 remains shut down in the vicinity of the crash as officials clear the scene and conduct their investigation. Drivers are advised to seek alternate routes and check for further updates from law enforcement.
