Whitmer Signs 8 Bills to Expand Michigan Affordable Housing and Strengthen Economy

Governor Whitmer aims to make Michigan a leader in housing, justice reform, and economic development through newly signed bipartisan legislation.

Michigan Passes Bills to Expand Affordable Housing Options

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed eight bipartisan bills aimed at addressing Michigan’s housing affordability crisis, reducing barriers for renters, and fostering economic growth. This legislative push is expected to help over 34,000 families secure affordable housing and strengthen protections for vulnerable populations in the justice system.

The three housing-related bills, Senate Bills 205, 206, and 207, prohibit landlords from discriminating against renters based on their source of income, including housing vouchers or benefits. State Senators Mary Cavanagh (D-Redford Township), Rosemary Bayer (D-West Bloomfield), and Jeff Irwin (D-Ann Arbor) sponsored the legislation. Governor Whitmer emphasized the importance of these measures in creating vibrant communities where all families can thrive.

“These commonsense laws ensure more families can afford a roof over their heads, while also reducing homelessness,” Whitmer said during the signing event in Lansing.

New Protections for Survivors of Human Trafficking

A second package of bills focuses on improving the legal process for survivors of human trafficking and sexual assault. Senate Bills 515, 516, and 517, sponsored by Senators Bayer, Sue Shink (D-Northfield Township), and Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit), allow prior criminal activities of perpetrators to be introduced as evidence. They also streamline testimony procedures for survivors, aiming to ensure justice is served while mitigating trauma for victims.

“These changes provide critical support to survivors while holding perpetrators accountable,” said Senator Shink. “Michigan is taking bold steps to combat trafficking and violence.”

Courtroom Support Expands for Youth Witnesses

Another piece of legislation, Senate Bill 248, extends the use of courtroom support dogs to assist individuals testifying in court up to age 18, an increase from the previous age limit of 16. Sponsored by Senator Dan Lauwers (R-Brockway), the bill aligns Michigan with 20 other states offering similar support. The measure aims to ease the stress of courtroom testimony for young people pursuing justice.

“This is about making the justice system more accessible and supportive for youth,” said Lauwers.

Economic Growth Through Data Center Investment

To boost Michigan’s economy, Senate Bill 237, sponsored by Senator Kevin Hertel (D-St. Clair Shores), extends tax exemptions for companies investing in data center equipment. This move incentivizes businesses to establish data centers in Michigan, creating jobs and spurring local economic activity.

Governor Whitmer called this bill a critical step toward making Michigan more attractive to tech and data-focused industries. “Expanding data center production bolsters local economies and ensures Michigan remains competitive,” she noted.

Record Legislative Achievements by the Whitmer Administration

With these latest measures, Governor Whitmer has signed a record 1,431 bipartisan bills since taking office. Her administration continues to prioritize housing affordability, public safety, and economic growth as part of its “Make it in Michigan” initiative.

The Governor also stressed her commitment to collaboration. “I’ll work with anyone to ensure Michigan remains the best place to live, work, and raise a family.”

Broader Context and Future Implications

The legislation reflects Michigan’s broader efforts to address systemic issues, such as homelessness, human trafficking, and economic inequity. As housing prices rise nationwide, Michigan’s focus on affordable options could serve as a model for other states grappling with similar challenges. Additionally, the emphasis on justice reform and economic development highlights the state’s commitment to protecting its residents while fostering innovation.
