Veterans and Voting: Priorities USA and Vet Voice Foundation File Amicus Brief to Protect Registration Sites

Veterans Affairs and Small Business Administration offices in Michigan face a legal challenge threatening their role as voter registration sites, sparking a defense from Vet Voice Foundation and Priorities USA.

Voting Rights Advocates Push Back Against GOP Challenge to Voter Registration Sites

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Vet Voice Foundation and Priorities USA are rallying to protect voter registration sites at Veterans Affairs (VA) and Small Business Administration (SBA) offices in Michigan. On Friday, September 27, they filed an Amicus Brief urging the court to reject a lawsuit spearheaded by the Republican National Committee (RNC), the Michigan Republican Party, and the Trump Campaign, which seeks to dismantle these offices’ role as voter registration agencies.

The lawsuit challenges Michigan’s agreements with VA and SBA offices, arguing that these locations should not serve as designated voter registration sites. This move has alarmed voting rights advocates who believe it will curb access to voter registration, particularly for veterans and small business owners who rely on these facilities.

Vet Voice Foundation, which initially sought to intervene in the case, was denied in August but remains steadfast in its efforts to defend the voter registration sites. In the Amicus Brief, the foundation argues that the lawsuit is without merit and that the plaintiffs lack legal standing because they suffer no harm from the arrangement between the state and these federal offices.

Veterans Affairs and Small Business Offices at the Heart of the Fight

Under federal law, voter registration agencies must provide critical services to facilitate voter registration, including distributing forms, assisting in their completion, and transmitting the forms to the proper authorities. Personnel at these sites are prohibited from engaging in partisan activities and must not link their services to any political outcomes. However, by seeking to end registration services at VA and SBA offices, this lawsuit could significantly reduce access to voter registration, particularly among veterans, a group Vet Voice Foundation is determined to protect.

Janessa Goldbeck, CEO of Vet Voice Foundation, issued a sharp rebuke, saying, “Troops put on the uniform and swear an oath to protect our Constitution and, with it, our representative democracy. It’s shameful that anyone would try to stop our Veterans from being able to register to vote, but here we are.”

Legal Fight Highlights Larger Voter Registration Battle

This challenge in Michigan is part of a broader political battle over voter registration policies across the country. The GOP’s challenge comes at a time when voting rights and access remain hot-button issues in the United States. According to Danielle Butterfield, Executive Director of Priorities USA, “We are disappointed to be denied intervention in this case, but believe the Amicus Brief clearly represents why it is a meritless attempt to suppress voter registration.”

As the case moves forward, advocates hope the court will recognize the importance of maintaining voter registration services in these critical federal offices, which many veterans and small business owners depend on. The outcome of this case could have implications for other states as well.
