Thumb Alliance: 95 Years of Keeping Chaos at Bay

Sheriff Ryan Robinson’s induction strengthens a tri-county law enforcement alliance in Michigan’s Thumb region, enhancing safety and mutual aid.

New Tuscola Sheriff Joins Longstanding Thumb Alliance

The tri-county Thumb law enforcement alliance has officially welcomed Sheriff Ryan Robinson, Tuscola County’s newly elected sheriff, into its ranks. The announcement was made during a meeting at the Cross Roads Junction Restaurant in Sanilac County on Friday, January 10. The location, situated near the borders of Huron and Tuscola counties, symbolized the unity between the three law enforcement offices.

Sheriff Robinson, who took office just 10 days earlier, met with Sanilac County Sheriff Paul D. Rich and Huron County Sheriff Kelly J. Hanson to reaffirm the commitment to this vital partnership. The alliance, which pools resources and provides mutual aid during emergencies, is credited with saving lives and ensuring public safety across the Thumb region.

95 Years of Combined Experience Powers Collaboration

The Thumb alliance has a long history of cooperation between the counties, offering not only logistical support but also a network of trust and expertise. With a combined 95 years of law enforcement experience, the sheriffs underscored the critical role this partnership plays in serving rural communities.

Sanilac Sheriff Rich praised the alliance’s tangible benefits, stating that “this partnership has often made the difference between life and death for the residents we serve.” Sheriff Hanson echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that close coordination has proven invaluable in cases requiring swift, cross-county responses.

Sheriff Robinson Brings New Energy to Proven System

Sheriff Robinson, previously a deputy in Tuscola County, expressed his deep appreciation for the alliance, noting firsthand its impact on the community. “I’ve seen the Thumb alliance in action during emergencies, and I’m honored to continue this tradition of service and support,” Robinson said.

The tri-county collaboration ensures that each sheriff’s office can rely on one another during natural disasters, major accidents, or other large-scale emergencies. Whether it’s providing backup during severe weather or responding to incidents requiring specialized skills, the alliance represents a model for rural law enforcement.

A Local Legacy of Public Safety

The sheriffs emphasized that while their combined experience strengthens the alliance, the focus remains on serving the citizens of Michigan’s Thumb. Sheriff Hanson highlighted several incidents in which rapid coordination between counties prevented tragedies.

“Whether it’s a major storm knocking out power or a high-risk search-and-rescue mission, we know we can count on each other to step up,” Hanson said.

Sanilac Sheriff Rich added that the alliance allows smaller, rural departments to share critical resources, such as specialized equipment and personnel, that might otherwise be unavailable.

Sheriff Robinson Faces Opportunities and Challenges Ahead

Sheriff Robinson steps into his new role at a time when law enforcement agencies nationwide are grappling with recruitment challenges and increasing demands. However, his familiarity with the region and its residents positions him as a leader prepared to meet these challenges.

Huron County’s Sheriff Hanson noted Robinson’s “deep knowledge of the region and his proven dedication as a deputy will bring a fresh perspective to the alliance while upholding its legacy.”

The alliance members agreed that strengthening ties and enhancing inter-agency cooperation would remain top priorities in the years to come.
