Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares Steps Down Amid Board Disagreements

Carlos Tavares resigns as Stellantis CEO, replaced by an interim executive committee led by John Elkann as the automaker seeks long-term leadership alignment.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares discusses the company’s software strategy during the Software Day presentation on Dec. 7, 2021. Stellantis will deploy next-generation tech platforms, build on existing connected vehicle capabilities to transform how customers interact with their vehicles, and generate approximately €20 billion in incremental annual revenues by 2030.

Carlos Tavares, the Chief Executive Officer of automaker Stellantis N.V., has abruptly resigned following reported strategic disagreements with the company’s board. Announced on December 1, the resignation comes as Stellantis prepares for a leadership overhaul, with the appointment of a new CEO targeted for the first half of 2025.

An interim executive committee, chaired by board chairman John Elkann, will manage operations until a permanent replacement is named. The decision underscores emerging tensions in what has been a largely successful tenure for Tavares, who previously spearheaded the creation of Stellantis through the merger of PSA Group and Fiat Chrysler.

Diverging Views Prompt Departure

Henri de Castries, Stellantis’ senior independent director, pointed to a divergence in vision between Tavares and the board. “Different views have emerged,” he stated, noting that the resignation was a mutual decision.

This development disrupts the steady alignment between Stellantis’ leadership and its major stakeholders, which had been credited for the automaker’s rapid ascent as a global leader in mobility innovation.

Leadership Transition Amid Stability Promises

Despite the sudden change, Stellantis has reaffirmed its financial guidance for the year, initially presented in October. The company, which manages an extensive portfolio of brands including Jeep, Chrysler, Peugeot, and Maserati, insists its strategic goals remain unchanged.

Chairman John Elkann expressed gratitude for Tavares’ contributions, particularly in steering PSA and Opel turnarounds before orchestrating Stellantis’ formation. “We thank Carlos for his dedication and look forward to working with our interim team to ensure continuity,” Elkann said.

Searching for the Next CEO

The search for a permanent CEO is being led by a special committee of the board. Analysts suggest the next leader will need to navigate not only Stellantis’ ambitious carbon net zero by 2038 target but also intensifying competition in the electric vehicle sector. The automaker’s bold Dare Forward 2030 plan, central to its vision, may hinge on finding a CEO who can align diverse stakeholder interests.

Context and Broader Implications

Stellantis’ strategic initiatives focus on positioning itself as a carbon-neutral mobility tech leader, a goal viewed as both bold and risky in an evolving global market. Tavares’ sudden departure highlights the challenges automakers face in achieving consensus while maintaining momentum in innovation.

Analysts are watching closely for potential ripple effects, especially as Stellantis operates in competitive markets spanning Europe, North America, and Asia. The company’s ability to maintain investor confidence through this transition will be critical.
