Saginaw Pursuit Ends in Fatality on Zilwaukee Bridge

SAGINAW, MI – A 29-year-old Saginaw man died Tuesday evening after a low-speed police pursuit ended with him jumping from the Zilwaukee Bridge on southbound I-75. The incident, which began as a response to a suicidal subject, also left a Saginaw County Sheriff’s Deputy with minor injuries.

Incident Began with Suicidal Crisis Call

Around 6:40 p.m., Saginaw Police Department (SPD) officers responded to reports of a suicidal individual at a residence on the 300 block of S. 13th Street. Upon arrival, officers found the man injured and in distress. He exited the home and managed to flee in his car.

Pursuit Leads to Wrong-Way Drive on I-75

SPD officers pursued the man at low speeds, making multiple attempts to stop him. The pursuit took a dangerous turn when the man entered southbound I-75 heading the wrong direction at the Zilwaukee Bridge. At this point, SPD terminated their pursuit to avoid further risk to public safety.

Collision with Sheriff’s Deputy’s Patrol Car

As the man reached the crest of the bridge, he rammed a Saginaw County Sheriff’s Deputy’s patrol car, causing minor injuries to the deputy. The collision rendered the man’s vehicle inoperable. Moments later, the man exited his car and jumped from the bridge. He succumbed to his injuries from the fall.

The deputy involved in the collision was transported to a local hospital and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigation Underway

The Michigan State Police (MSP) Third District Special Investigation Section has been requested by SPD to investigate the incident. MSP officials have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Authorities emphasized the importance of mental health resources for those in crisis.
