President Joe Biden announced the 2025 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Among the honorees is George W. Romney, former Governor of Michigan and U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Recognized posthumously, Romney’s legacy of public service and innovative leadership in the automotive industry were central to his selection.

“George Romney’s vision transformed Michigan and set a high standard for public service,” said President Biden. His leadership during a pivotal period in Michigan’s automotive history and his dedication to civil rights cemented his role as a trailblazer for the state.

Earvin “Magic” Johnson

Lansing-born Earvin “Magic” Johnson is a legendary basketball player who led Michigan State University to a national championship and who led the Los Angeles Lakers to five championships. Off the court, he is a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist who supports underserved communities through his Magic Johnson Foundation.

The award ceremony took place at the White House on January 4, 2025.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom was also awarded to a diverse group of leaders across fields such as science, sports, and social justice. Key recipients include:

  • José Andrés, renowned chef and humanitarian, for his work providing disaster relief through World Central Kitchen.
  • Lionel Messi, soccer legend and philanthropist, for his global impact on sports and youth education.
  • Fannie Lou Hamer (posthumous), civil rights activist and founder of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, for her role in advancing racial justice.

Honoring Cultural Pioneers

Bono, the lead singer of the iconic rock band U2, is renowned for his dual role as a trailblazing advocate fighting against AIDS and poverty. Through his influential endeavors, Bono successfully united politicians from conflicting parties to establish the United States PEPFAR AIDS program. Additionally, he played a significant role in co-founding TWO prominent advocacy groups, namely ONE and (RED).

Meanwhile, Anna Wintour, Vogue’s editor-in-chief, was recognized for her influence in fashion and philanthropy. Wintour’s leadership of the Met Gala has raised millions for the arts, while her editorial vision has shaped contemporary fashion culture.

Michael J. Fox, the renowned actor, has been honored with five Emmy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Grammy Award. In addition to his illustrious acting career, he is globally recognized as a leading champion for advancing research and development in Parkinson’s disease.

Leaders in Public Service and Humanitarian Efforts

The honorees include Hillary Rodham Clinton, the first woman nominated for president by a major party, and Robert F. Kennedy (posthumous), who left a lasting legacy in justice and equality as Attorney General and U.S. Senator.

Jane Goodall, a pioneer in conservation, received the award for her groundbreaking research on primates and tireless advocacy for environmental preservation.
