Only 10 Brave Vendors Defy Dismal Turnout in Port Austin Farm Market’s Grand Opening

The 2020 Memorial Weekend saw a foggy opening for the Port Austin Farm Market, one of Michigan’s largest outdoor markets. The city tried its best to appear welcoming, but the usually bustling market was eerily quiet with only a few vendors and no music. Covid-19 had definitely left its mark, with many people wearing masks and keeping their distance. Unfortunately, some traditional events like the Ubly farmer’s market and Harbor Beach’s Memorial Day parade had to be canceled due to the pandemic.

The market was a stark contrast to previous years. Instead of a vast crowd of shoppers, there were only a few scattered vendors. The usual music and raffle ticket sales were missing, making the atmosphere feel a bit off. Despite this, most people were respectful of the situation, wearing masks and maintaining distance from each other.

The summer of 2020 is bound to be affected by Covid-19. Governor Gretchen Whitmer has extended Michigan’s stay-at-home order until June 12 due to the continued infection rate. This means public venues like theaters, gyms, and casinos will remain closed for the time being.

In the town of Ubly, the farmer’s market has been canceled for the season. Harbor Beach has also canceled its Memorial Day parade. Various events in Caseville, such as the Trash and Treasure Days and the Market On Main, are either canceled or on hold. The Caseville historical Societies Ice Cream Social has also been canceled due to Covid-19.

Despite the changes, some events in Caseville are still taking place. The 19th Annual Blessing of the Fleet at Caseville Municipal Harbor and the Veteran’s Memorial Service by American Legion Jean Post #543a the Caseville Cemetery are still scheduled to happen.

The 2020 opening of the Port Austin Farm Market was a different experience due to Covid-19, with fewer vendors and sparse crowds. Despite the changes, the city tried its best to keep the spirit alive. However, the effects of the pandemic were clearly visible, with canceled events and a stay-at-home order in place. Yet, some traditions like the Blessing of the Fleet and the Veteran’s Memorial Service continue, reminding us of the resilience of the community. #PortAustinFarmMarket #Covid19Impact
