November 2nd Michigan State Police Shooting in Flint Under Attorney General Review

Fatal police shooting in Flint sparks investigation as officials seek clarity on Nov. 2 incident involving Rayvon Shahid.

Michigan State Police Conclude Shooting Investigation

The Michigan State Police (MSP) have finalized their investigation into the November 2 fatal officer-involved shooting of Rayvon Shahid, a 27-year-old Flint resident. The case now moves to the Michigan Department of Attorney General (AG) for review. The incident, which unfolded on Essex Street near Pasadena Avenue, has reignited discussions about police conduct and community trust in law enforcement.

Col. James F. Grady II, director of the MSP, emphasized the gravity of such incidents. “A loss of life during any police encounter is tragic,” Grady stated, underscoring the agency’s commitment to a “full and impartial investigation.”

Fatal Encounter Details Released

According to preliminary findings, two troopers from the MSP Flint Post encountered Shahid at 6:34 p.m. Shahid was reportedly armed and ignored multiple commands to stop and disarm. The suspect fled on foot despite verbal warnings—issued at least seven times. An attempted taser deployment was unsuccessful, leading officers to discharge their firearms and striking Shahid.

Emergency first aid was rendered at the scene before Shahid was transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. A Glock pistol with a loaded extended magazine was recovered at the scene.

The names of the officers involved have not been released due to contractual restrictions with the Michigan State Police Troopers Association, which protects identities unless criminal charges are filed. The officers remain on administrative leave as the AG reviews the findings.

Community Leaders Demand Transparency

The incident has drawn significant attention from Flint community leaders and activists, many of whom are calling for increased transparency and accountability. Grady noted that he had met with local leaders and Shahid’s mother to assure them of the MSP’s commitment to a thorough investigation.

Community members remain divided over the use of force, with some advocating for improved de-escalation training and others awaiting further clarity from the AG’s review.

AG’s Office to Decide Next Steps

The Attorney General’s Office will determine whether any criminal charges will be filed against the troopers involved. This review process is expected to involve the examination of video footage, forensic evidence, and eyewitness accounts.

The case adds to ongoing debates in Michigan and nationwide over law enforcement practices, particularly in encounters involving armed individuals. The AG’s decision will likely influence public discourse on the balance between officer safety and the use of lethal force.

Broader Implications for Michigan Policing

This investigation follows a series of high-profile incidents across the country, emphasizing the need for systemic reforms. Flint, a city with a history of strained police-community relations, remains at the center of discussions about accountability and trust in law enforcement.

Grady reaffirmed the MSP’s commitment to cooperation, stating, “We will fully support the AG’s review to ensure that justice is served.” Advocates have urged both the MSP and state officials to expedite the process to provide the community with answers.
