Need Addiction Help? Michigan’s New Locator Tool Can Guide You

A new mapping tool helps residents find addiction help with substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and recovery services statewide.

Michigan Expands Access to SUD Treatment with New Mapping Tool

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has launched a new Substance Use Disorder (SUD) locator tool on the MI Bridges website to help residents find treatment and recovery providers. The feature allows individuals to search for licensed SUD treatment centers by ZIP code, city, or county, filtering options based on service types such as inpatient, outpatient, and medication-assisted treatment, as well as whether the provider accepts Medicaid.

Statewide Addiction Help to Critical Recovery Services

Initially launched in November 2024, the SUD mapping tool has been accessed over 6,700 times by more than 3,369 users. The new integration into MI Bridges ensures even greater accessibility for those seeking substance use treatment options in Michigan.

MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel emphasized the importance of expanding treatment access: “This tool can help residents find treatment and recovery locations across the state to ensure they are connected to the services they need when and where they need them.”

Healthcare Leaders Praise the Initiative

Healthcare leaders across Michigan have hailed the new tool as a vital step forward in addressing the state’s substance use crisis.

“The MI SUD locator site is a critical advancement that provides a centralized tool to help our families, loved ones, providers, and stakeholders identify the resources available for treatment and intervention across the state,” said Greg Toutant, chief executive officer of Great Lakes Recovery Centers, Inc. in the Upper Peninsula. “This site plays an important role in streamlining access and information for anyone looking for help and resources.”

Michigan’s Efforts to Expand Addiction Help and SUD Treatment Services

MDHHS has implemented several additional measures to enhance SUD treatment accessibility:

  • Expanded Opioid Health Homes to include Alcohol Use Disorder and Stimulant Use Disorder, broadening eligibility for services statewide.
  • Increased Medicaid SUD provider numbers by reducing administrative barriers and offering financial incentives like loan repayment.
  • Worked with physicians to increase buprenorphine prescribers across Michigan.
  • Introduced early intervention treatment programs at Federally Qualified Health Centers, Rural Health Clinics, and Child and Adolescent Health Centers.
  • Enhanced support for pregnant individuals in northern Michigan, providing physicians with specialized training in Opioid Home Health networks.
  • Expanded recovery housing through partnerships with the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, adding nearly 100 new recovery beds in high-need areas.
  • Improved substance-exposed newborn care, allowing families to stay together during Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome treatment.
  • Collaborated with the Michigan Department of Corrections to deploy peer support specialists in parole and probation offices.
  • Increased transportation support, providing over 20,000 rides for SUD-related services, addressing a major barrier to treatment.
  • Expanded opioid treatment at 10 Michigan prisons, providing medications for opioid use disorder to 884 incarcerated individuals.
