Michigan State University sets a new enrollment record with 52,089 students, marking the largest student body in the university’s history.
MSU’s Largest and Most Diverse Class in History
Michigan State University (MSU) is celebrating its largest-ever fall enrollment, with 52,089 students registered for the 2024-25 academic year. This milestone reflects the university’s growing reputation as the top choice for students across Michigan and beyond. The diverse student body includes representatives from all 83 Michigan counties, all 50 U.S. states, and 138 countries.
Among the highlights of this record-breaking enrollment:
- 10,978 new undergraduate students, including first-year and transfer students.
- 37,646 students hail from Michigan, emphasizing MSU’s continued popularity as the leading choice for in-state students.
- Students of color make up 27.8% of the domestic class, making it the most diverse in MSU’s history.
- The university received 62,138 applications, surpassing last year’s total by 5.5%.
MSU President Kevin M. Guskiewicz, Ph.D., emphasized the university’s mission to offer a transformative college experience. “These enrollment numbers reflect what Spartans know to be true — that Michigan State offers a world-class education, a transformative college experience, and excellent return on graduates’ investment in degrees that become appreciating assets throughout their careers,” he said.
Expanding Access and Opportunity for All Students
MSU’s commitment to making higher education accessible is reflected in several recent initiatives aimed at reducing financial barriers and expanding opportunities. Interim Provost Thomas Jeitschko noted, “These enrollment numbers are evidence of the strength of MSU’s reputation and success — and of our ongoing commitment to expand access and opportunity for all students.”
Among the key initiatives:
- The Joseph R. and Sarah L. Williams Scholarship, named after MSU’s first president and first lady, which will cover tuition, housing, food, and an education abroad experience for undergraduate students.
- The launch of the Native American Tuition Advantage program, allowing students from the U.S. and Canada who meet tribal affiliation criteria to qualify for in-state tuition rates, alongside potential access to the Spartan Tuition Advantage program.
In addition, a $1 million grant from the state of Michigan’s Sixty by 30 initiative will enable MSU to improve credit evaluation, expand the Credit for Prior Learning program, and create partnerships with community colleges to make an MSU degree more accessible across the state.
