MSP Troopers Respond to Shots Fired in Coleman

COLEMAN, Mich. — Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers from the Mt. Pleasant Post responded to a critical incident involving an armed suspect barricaded inside a residence in Coleman, Isabella County.

The situation began late Monday night at approximately 11:55 PM, when troopers were dispatched to a shots fired call at a residence on NE County Line Road near Shearer Road. Upon arrival, a male suspect exited the home and fired at responding officers, prompting troopers to return fire. The suspect then retreated back inside the residence, where he remained barricaded for several hours.

Emergency Teams Deployed to Scene

As the standoff unfolded, MSP Negotiators, Emergency Support Team, Aviation, and Bomb Squad members were deployed to assist in de-escalating the situation. A 12-year-old girl inside the residence was injured during the incident and was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. She is currently in stable condition. No additional injuries were reported among officers or civilians.

Authorities urged the public to avoid the area as tactical units worked to resolve the incident.

Suspect Taken Into Custody

At approximately 4:00 PM Tuesday, MSP confirmed that the suspect was safely taken into custody. The identity of the suspect has not yet been released, and details about potential charges are forthcoming as the investigation continues.

Investigation Underway

Following MSP policy, incidents involving a trooper discharging their firearm are immediately subject to an internal review. The 3rd District Special Investigation Section has responded to the scene and will conduct a thorough investigation. As per standard procedure, the trooper(s) involved in the shooting have been placed on leave pending the outcome of the review.

Upon completion of the investigation, all findings, including video evidence, will be submitted to the Michigan Department of Attorney General for further review and legal proceedings if necessary.
