Michigan Senator Gary Peters Announces Retirement After Two Decades in Public Service

Sen. Gary Peters will not seek re-election in 2026, signaling a transition in Michigan’s Senate leadership.

Sen. Gary Peters to Retire, Ending Distinguished Political Career

LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., announced Tuesday that he will not seek re-election in 2026, marking the end of a two-decade career in public service that included roles in the U.S. Senate, House of Representatives, and Michigan state government.

Peters, 65, reflected on his tenure, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve Michigan. “My service in Congress has been the honor of my life,” he said. “It has been a humbling responsibility given to me by the voters of the state that I love.”

A Legacy of Public Service

Peters’ career spans sixteen years in Congress, including three terms in the House of Representatives and two in the Senate. Before that, he served as a city councilman, state senator, and naval officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve.

During his time in Washington, Peters focused on border security, veterans’ support, Great Lakes protection, and government efficiency. He noted that in the 117th Congress, he was the most successful senator in passing legislation in over four decades, working across party lines to get bills enacted into law.

“There’s more work to do, and I intend to continue fighting for Michiganders until my final day in office,” Peters stated. “That includes lowering costs, ensuring opportunity for all, and protecting American democratic values.”

Shifting the Torch to a New Generation

Peters said he always intended to pass the torch to the next generation of leaders, aligning with the Founding Fathers’ vision of citizen legislators. “I have always believed members of Congress should serve a few terms and then return to private life,” he said.

While not retiring, Peters plans to actively support the Democratic Party’s effort to retain his seat. “I will not be on the ballot next year, but I will not just walk away,” he said. “I plan to ensure we elect a dynamic Democratic candidate to continue serving Michigan in the Senate.”

His retirement opens the door for a competitive race in Michigan, a battleground state that has seen tight Senate contests in recent elections. The race is expected to draw high-profile Democratic and Republican candidates, setting the stage for a high-stakes 2026 campaign.

What’s Next for Peters?

While uncertain about his post-Senate plans, Peters shared a personal passion: riding his Harley-Davidson on winding backroads. “I look forward to writing new chapters in my life,” he said, “and I expect one of them will be experiencing the joy of total freedom on my motorcycle on a warm, sunny day.”
