Michigan Resturants And Tipped Wage Workers Fear Mass Layoffs as Democrats Stall Action

Michigan’s hospitality industry faces a crisis as Democrats prioritize controversial policies over saving tipped wage jobs and small businesses.

GOP Warns of Hospitality Industry Collapse Without Tipped Wage Protections

LANSING, MI—State Republicans are voicing outrage over the Democrat-controlled legislature’s failure to prioritize policies critical to Michigan’s tipped wage workers and small businesses, warning of impending mass layoffs and closures in the hospitality industry if the current stalemate persists.

At a press conference on Friday, State Rep. Mike Harris (R-Waterford) and colleagues announced their refusal to vote on any additional legislation until Democrats address the tipped wage crisis. Harris criticized Democratic lawmakers for focusing on policies such as granting driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants and releasing certain inmates, while neglecting to support servers and bartenders who depend on tips to make ends meet.

“The Democrat majority is leaving servers and bartenders without the solution they need to save their tips,” said Harris. “Restaurant workers put food on our tables, and the tips they earn put food on their own tables. These hardworking Michiganders need their representatives to put in the work and bring back the tipped wage.”

Dire Predictions for Michigan’s Hospitality Sector

According to a recent Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association (MRLA) survey, the consequences of eliminating the tipped wage system could devastate the state’s restaurant industry:

  • 66% of restaurant owners say they would be forced to lay off employees.
  • 20% anticipate shutting down entirely.
  • 42% would need to reduce operating hours.
  • Over 92% expect to increase menu prices, with projected hikes of 20%–25% by early 2025.

The survey also revealed overwhelming support among tipped workers for retaining the system. 82% of servers prefer the current tipping model, and 79% fear losing their jobs if the tip credit is eliminated.

Democrats Accused of “Dragging Their Feet”

State Rep. Ken Borton (R-Gaylord) echoed Harris’s sentiments, accusing Democrats of ignoring the needs of small business owners and tipped workers. “We’re up against the buzzer on this lame-duck session, and Democrats are still completely ignorant to the dire situation faced by our tipped wage workers and small businesses,” said Borton.

Borton emphasized that Republicans have been negotiating with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Democratic lawmakers in good faith but accused them of prioritizing unrelated leftist policies. “The people chose Republicans because we’re going to save our tipped wage workers and small businesses. If Democrats don’t see the writing on the wall, they’re in for a rude awakening come January,” he said.

Broader Implications for Michigan’s Economy

The tipped wage debate comes at a precarious time for Michigan’s economy, which relies heavily on the hospitality and tourism sectors. Small business owners are warning that higher labor costs, combined with rising inflation, could force them to raise prices, cut jobs, and reduce hours—a triple blow for communities statewide.

Republicans argue that maintaining the tip credit is essential to sustaining Michigan’s economic recovery. They have called on Democratic lawmakers to shift focus and work toward a bipartisan solution before the end of the legislative session.
