Michigan Election Scandal: Noncitizen Voting Case Shocks Ann Arbor!

Noncitizen voting case in Ann Arbor prompts charges and parallel investigations by state and local authorities.

Michigan Officials Address Rare Case of Alleged Noncitizen Voting

ANN ARBOR, Mich.Charges have been filed against a non-U.S. citizen accused of illegally registering to vote and casting a ballot in the 2024 Michigan General Election, state and local officials announced yesterday. According to a joint statement from Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit, the individual allegedly attempted to vote illegally at an early voting site in Ann Arbor on October 27. The Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office has charged the defendant with Unauthorized Elector Attempting to Vote and Perjury for submitting a false affidavit to register, both felonies under Michigan law.

Benson and Savit emphasized that while cases of noncitizen voting are “extremely isolated and rare,” state officials take any potential violation of election law seriously. “Only U.S. citizens can register and vote in our elections. It is illegal to lie on any registration forms or voting applications about one’s citizenship status. Doing so is a felony,” Benson stated, reiterating that Michigan law mandates rigorous protections against voter fraud. She expressed appreciation for the clerk’s office and law enforcement’s swift response to the case.

Attorney General Launches Independent Investigation

In response to the charges, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel confirmed that her office has begun an independent, parallel investigation into the case. “We take all allegations of voter fraud extremely seriously,” Nessel said, affirming that Michigan’s election laws are clear in prohibiting noncitizen voting.

While both Secretary Benson and Attorney General Nessel stressed the importance of upholding the integrity of Michigan’s elections, they noted the rarity of such incidents. Multiple state and national investigations, they added, have consistently found minimal instances of noncitizens attempting to register or vote. Both officials underscored that the state’s election processes are designed to catch and prevent unauthorized voting.

The charges highlight Michigan’s stance on voter eligibility and serve as a caution for anyone considering unlawful voting activities in the state.
