Michigan Dems Remember January 6, 2021 Insurrection as House Certifies 2024 Election

Four years after the Capitol insurrection, Michigan House Democrats reaffirm their commitment to democracy by certifying the 2024 election results.

LANSING, Mich. – On the anniversary of one of the darkest days in recent American history, Michigan House Democrats voted to certify the 2024 presidential election results, reinforcing their commitment to upholding democracy and ensuring a peaceful transfer of power. The certification process stands in stark contrast to the chaos and violence of January 6, 2021, when a mob stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of that year’s election.

Certifying the 2024 Election Results

Today’s certification process unfolded smoothly as Michigan’s Democratic lawmakers joined their counterparts across the country in affirming the will of the voters. Democratic Party leaders framed the event as a testament to their resolve to protect democratic institutions and ensure the peaceful transition of power.

“Michigan Democrats know that our democracy must be fought for at every turn,” said Lavora Barnes, Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party. “I am proud to have watched them participate in the democratic process today when they cast their votes to certify the 2024 election results.”

Reflecting on the January 6th Insurrection

The certification comes exactly four years after the Capitol insurrection, when violent rioters, incited by then-President Donald Trump, stormed the Capitol to disrupt the certification of the 2020 presidential election. The attack resulted in widespread damage, injuries to law enforcement officers, and the deaths of five individuals.

“This day in 2021 was filled with violence and bloodshed,” Barnes said. “Violent insurrectionists, incited by Donald Trump, attempted to overturn the will of the people by attacking the Capitol and the brave officers serving there.”

The stark difference between the two events highlights the progress made in ensuring the stability of the democratic process, but Barnes cautioned that vigilance remains necessary.

“Once again, Democrats showed that ours is the party of peace and democracy as the House ensures the voice of Michiganders and Americans alike is heard,” she added.

A Renewed Commitment to Democracy

The 2024 election, like its predecessors, saw its share of political tension and divisive rhetoric. However, Michigan’s certification process unfolded without incident, a point that Democratic leaders say reflects the resilience of the democratic system.

“The peaceful transition of power today will reinforce the ideals that founded our country and remind us that we must protect them every day,” Barnes said.

Michigan Democrats emphasized the importance of safeguarding democratic principles in the face of ongoing challenges. With the memory of the 2020 insurrection still vivid, today’s proceedings served as both a moment of reflection and a reaffirmation of the values that underpin American governance.

A National Context

The certification of the 2024 election results comes amid a political climate still marked by sharp partisan divides. Efforts to delegitimize elections and question the integrity of democratic processes persist, making the peaceful transition of power an essential symbol of democratic stability.

As Michigan Democrats look forward, they vow to remain steadfast in their commitment to preserving democratic norms and ensuring that every vote counts.
