BRIGHTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A massive explosion at the General Motors Proving Grounds in Brighton Township on Tuesday morning caused significant property damage to nearby homes, including shattered windows and blown-out doors. The Michigan State Police 1st District reported injuries, though the blast startled residents and prompted a multi-agency emergency response.

WILX reported that Kevin Kelly, a GM spokesperson, the explosion occurred at one of the oil wells located on the proving grounds. While the oil well is on GM property, it is operated by a third party. Michigan State Police (MSP) stated that the impact was felt throughout the area, knocking items off walls in nearby homes and raising initial concerns about hazardous materials. However, authorities have since confirmed that there is no danger to the general public.

Emergency Crews Respond and Contain the Fire

Several fire departments, the Brighton Area Fire Authority, and Michigan State Police troopers responded swiftly to the scene to extinguish the fire and assess the situation. Officials confirmed that the fire has been brought under control, though the exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

The Michigan State Police First District provided updates on the incident via social media, noting that although the explosion caused significant damage to nearby residences, no injuries have been reported. The site at 3300 General Motors Road remains secured as investigators, including HazMat teams, work to determine what led to the blast.

Residents in the affected area described the explosion as loud and powerful, with several reporting their homes shaking from the impact. “It was like nothing I’ve ever heard before,” said one local resident. “It felt like the ground moved.”

Safety Assurances and Next Steps

Despite the severity of the explosion, authorities have assured the public that there are no hazardous materials threatening nearby neighborhoods. The focus now shifts to investigating the third-party operator of the oil well and assessing the structural damage to nearby properties. GM has yet to release further details regarding the facility’s operations or its relationship with the third-party operator.

Updates will be shared as more information becomes available. For now, residents and local authorities are relieved that the incident, while disruptive, resulted in no reported injuries.
