How Michigan’s FORCE Team Crushed the State’s Biggest Auto Theft Ring!

Michigan’s Attorney General strikes at the heart of an organized crime ring, bringing four suspects to justice in a statewide vehicle theft operation.

LANSING, MI — In a significant development in the fight against auto theft, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced the arrest and arraignment of four alleged members of a sprawling criminal enterprise responsible for stealing hundreds of vehicles across Southeast Michigan. The arrests, carried out on January 2, were the latest action in an ongoing investigation by the Attorney General’s FOCUSED Organized Retail Crime Enforcement (FORCE) Team.

The four individuals—Davonta Jones, 31, Donovan Tucker, 22, Davion Tucker, 21, and Timothy Bell, 23, all from Detroit—face multiple felony charges, including Conducting a Criminal Enterprise, a 20-year felony. Combined, the suspects are charged with over 30 counts of Receiving and Concealing Stolen Motor Vehicles.

Statewide Auto Theft Network Uncovered

Authorities allege that the criminal group targeted new vehicle storage lots, dealerships, parking lots, and even private residences to steal vehicles. The stolen cars were allegedly sold on the black market at prices far below market value. Law enforcement officials have linked these thefts to other criminal activities.

“This is a violent, prolific criminal organization that has terrorized communities across our state,” Nessel stated. “These arrests mark a significant step in dismantling the network and protecting Michiganders from further harm.”

The FORCE Team investigation began in May 2024, following months of surveillance and collaborative work with the Troy Police Department. According to Nessel, the suspects employed countersurveillance techniques and did not hesitate to use violence, including ramming security vehicles when confronted.

Extensive Law Enforcement Collaboration

The operation reflects a sweeping collaboration among law enforcement agencies, with more than a dozen municipal departments and state-level task forces contributing. Participating agencies include the Troy Police Department, Detroit Police Department’s Commercial Auto Theft Unit, and Michigan State Police, among others.

During the arrests, law enforcement seized a significant cache of electronic key fobs and cash, providing further evidence of the suspects’ alleged activities. The four suspects were arraigned on January 3, with bonds set at $500,000 each.

Organized Crime Task Force Leading the Charge

The FORCE Team, established in January 2023, has been pivotal in disrupting organized retail and auto theft operations. As the first task force in the nation with embedded staff from the Attorney General’s Office, FORCE combines resources from local, state, and federal agencies, including partnerships with retailers like Walmart, Meijer, and Home Depot.

The Attorney General’s office emphasized that this is an ongoing investigation and additional arrests or charges may follow.

Broader Implications for Michigan Residents

Auto theft remains a persistent issue in Michigan, particularly in urban and suburban areas. According to law enforcement, stolen vehicles are often used in further crimes, compounding the threat to public safety. Nessel underscored the importance of community vigilance and reporting suspicious activity.

“Law enforcement cannot tackle this issue alone,” Nessel said. “We urge residents to report suspicious sales of vehicles and work with local police to ensure these criminals face justice.”

What Comes Next for the Defendants

The defendants will face probable cause hearings later this month. Jones, Donovan Tucker, and Davion Tucker will appear before the 19th District Court in Dearborn on January 17, while Bell will appear in Monroe’s 1st District Court on January 14.

While these arrests represent a significant victory, law enforcement officials caution that the operation’s full scope may take months to unravel. Meanwhile, Michigan residents are encouraged to remain cautious and report any suspicious activity involving vehicle sales.
