House Republicans Face Lawsuit Over Withheld Bills, Warren’s Mai Xiong Applauds Senate Democrats’ Legal Action

Michigan Democrats push for legislative accountability as House Republicans refuse to send bills to the governor.

Michigan Democrats Sue GOP Speaker Over Blocked Legislation

LANSING, Mich. – Senate Democrats have filed a lawsuit against Republican Speaker Matt Hall, demanding the immediate delivery of nine bills to the governor’s desk. The lawsuit challenges the House Republicans’ decision to hold up legislation already approved by both chambers, including House Bill 6058, which aims to reduce health insurance costs for public employees and their families.

Among the strongest supporters of this legal move is State Rep. Mai Xiong (D-Warren), who sponsored House Bill 6058. Xiong argues that withholding these bills deprives Michigan families of much-needed financial relief and undermines the integrity of the lawmaking process.

House Republicans Accused of Blocking Worker Protections

“This lawsuit demonstrates Democrats’ dedication to the working people of Michigan and to ensuring House Republicans respect the lawmaking process in our state,” said Xiong. “When House Republicans threw public employees and their families under the bus by holding this legislation hostage, I promised to keep fighting to ensure our public workers don’t have to sacrifice themselves and their families’ wellbeing to continue educating, protecting and serving our communities.”

The lawsuit seeks to enforce legislative rules requiring the House to transmit approved bills to the governor without undue delay. Senate Democrats argue that withholding these measures—many of which address key financial and labor protections—violates constitutional requirements.

Health Care and Pension Relief at Risk

House Bill 6058, one of the stalled bills, is designed to provide immediate relief from high health insurance costs for public employees. Advocates for the legislation argue that delays in passing the bill increase financial stress for thousands of families, including teachers, police officers, firefighters, and municipal employees.

The bill’s supporters say that Republicans’ refusal to send it to the governor prevents necessary reforms in Michigan’s public sector health care system.

A Legal Battle Over Legislative Process

The lawsuit against Speaker Matt Hall is an unprecedented step to hold House Republicans accountable for what Democrats call a deliberate obstruction of government operations. If successful, the lawsuit could set a precedent for ensuring timely processing of legislation in the Michigan Legislature.

Democrats argue that the lawsuit is not just about health care or pensions but about preventing partisan gridlock from disrupting essential government functions.

What’s Next for the Blocked Bills?

Legal experts anticipate that the lawsuit will push the Michigan Supreme Court to address the issue. If the court rules in favor of Senate Democrats, the bills will move forward for signature by Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Meanwhile, Mai Xiong and other lawmakers continue to push for legislative fairness, arguing that partisan politics should not come at the expense of Michigan families.
