Gunshots, Fire, and Tragedy: Mackinac County Home Erupts in Flames

Officials suspect homeowner deliberately set fire in apparent suicide, investigation ongoing.

Tragic Fire in Moran Township Believed to be Intentional

MACKINAC COUNTY, Mich. – A residential fire in Moran Township on February 21, 2025, resulted in the total destruction of a home and the death of one individual, authorities confirmed. According to the Michigan State Police (MSP) St. Ignace Post, troopers were dispatched at approximately 3:00 PM for a welfare check at a residence on Portage Street. Shortly after their arrival, the house suddenly erupted in flames.

The fire spread rapidly, with officials suspecting the use of an accelerant. As the flames intensified, gunshots were reportedly heard coming from inside the home. Due to the extreme danger, troopers were unable to enter the burning structure. The St. Ignace Fire Department was called to the scene, but the fire quickly consumed the house, rendering it a complete loss.

MSP Investigates Possible Suicide by Fire and Gunshot

Following the fire’s containment, MSP Fire Investigation Unit personnel arrived to assess the scene. MSP Crime Lab personnel and the MSP Bomb Squad were also deployed in case any suspicious devices were discovered, given the fire’s rapid ignition and reported gunfire.

Upon searching the remains of the residence, investigators located the body of a deceased adult male, believed to be the homeowner. Preliminary findings suggest that the fire was intentionally set and that the suspected gunshots may have been self-inflicted. Authorities confirmed that another adult known to reside in the home was not present at the time and remains unharmed.

Officials stated that no other bodies or explosive devices were found at the scene.

Forensic Investigation and Autopsy Underway

The MSP continues its investigation, including forensic processing of evidence and an autopsy to officially determine the cause of death. The identity of the deceased individual has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.

Authorities emphasize that this appears to be a self-initiated act and that no ongoing threat exists to the public.

MSP was assisted at the scene by multiple agencies, including:

  • St. Ignace Fire Department – Fire suppression and containment
  • Mackinac County Sheriff’s Department – Law enforcement support
