From Wheelchair to PGA Contender: Michigan Golfer Brett White’s Inspiring Comeback

Grand Rapids golfer Brett White, backed by GameAbove Sports, looks to achieve his dream of PGA Tour membership at the Puerto Rico Open.

White’s Pursuit of PGA Tour Success

Brett White, a 31-year-old professional golfer from Grand Rapids, Michigan, is set to compete in the Puerto Rico Open from March 6-9, marking a crucial step in his quest to secure full PGA Tour status. White, an Eastern Michigan University graduate, has played in PGA Tour events before, but this tournament presents a new opportunity to solidify his standing.

Playing on the PGA Tour is only part of the dream. I want to win and keep playing at the highest level,” White said.

Sponsor GameAbove Sports Provides Crucial Support

White credits GameAbove Sports, his primary sponsor, for providing the financial backing that has allowed him to stay focused on his game.

Without GameAbove, I would not have been able to keep playing the sport I love. Their financial support and unrelenting commitment to me has allowed me to focus on improving my game rather than worry about the financial challenges of trying to reach the PGA Tour,” White said.

GameAbove Sports, an organization committed to supporting amateur, collegiate, and professional golf, has invested heavily in golf development, including $17.5 million in financial support to Eastern Michigan University’s Men’s and Women’s Golf Programs.

Overcoming Adversity to Return to Golf

White’s journey to this point has been anything but ordinary. In 2017, he was struck with viral encephalitis, a life-threatening illness that left him confined to a wheelchair. He underwent ten weeks of intense physical therapy, relearning to walk before resuming his golf career. With no medical exemption, he lost his tour status and had to rebuild from the ground up.

Two years after his illness, White captured the Nevada Open title, proving his resilience and determination. Since then, he has played in more than 50 PGA Tour-sanctioned events, including notable performances at the 2023 Sanderson Farms Championship, where he finished tied for 13th, and the WM Phoenix Open, competing alongside some of the sport’s biggest names.

PGA Tour Aspirations in Puerto Rico

White enters the Puerto Rico Open with hopes of securing his first PGA Tour win, following in the footsteps of past champions like Tony Finau (2016) and Viktor Hovland (2020). The tournament provides a significant opportunity for players to earn a full PGA Tour exemption, a goal White has been working toward for years.

GameAbove Sports’ Impact on Golf

GameAbove Sports continues to expand its influence in professional and collegiate golf. In 2024, the organization opened the GameAbove Golf Performance Center at Eagle Crest Golf Club, one of Golf Pass’s Top 10 College Golf Courses. Additionally, GameAbove has played a role in major golf events, including the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit and the Corby Classic in Toronto.

White is among six professional golfers supported by GameAbove Sports, alongside Josh Anderson, Michael Blair, Beau Breault, Cam Kellett, and Kyle Rodes.
