Fatal Crash on Icy Sebewaing Road Leaves One Dead

Icy Roads and High Winds Lead to Tragedy in Sebewaing

SEBEWAING TWP., Mich. — A 57-year-old Sebewaing man died following a head-on collision with a tractor-trailer on Unionville Road near Loomis Road in Sebewaing Township. The crash, which occurred at approximately 10:17 a.m. on Jan. 27, 2025, is under investigation by the Michigan State Police Caro Post.

Authorities identified icy road conditions and high winds as contributing factors to the fatal crash. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected.

Tractor-Trailer Loses Control on Treacherous Roadway

The crash unfolded when a 34-year-old Crystal man driving southbound in a tractor-trailer lost control. The vehicle crossed into the northbound lane, colliding with a 2024 Chevrolet Blazer driven by the Sebewaing man.

The force of the collision left the Blazer’s driver critically injured. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer sustained only minor injuries and received treatment at the scene.

Emergency Response and Investigation

Multiple agencies responded, including Sebewaing Police and Fire Departments, Unionville Fire Department, and towing services from D&J Towing and Bartnik Towing. The Michigan State Police Third District Accident Reconstruction Team is assisting with the investigation to determine the precise sequence of events.

“The combination of icy roads and high winds creates extremely hazardous driving conditions,” said officials from the Michigan State Police. “We urge drivers to use caution in such weather.”

No Suspicion of Impairment

Preliminary findings suggest no involvement of alcohol or drugs in the crash. Authorities are focusing on environmental conditions, including the icy surface and strong winds, which likely contributed to the tractor-trailer’s loss of control.
