Detroit People Mover Returns Today with Improved Service and Free Fares

The Detroit People Mover reopens with new rail infrastructure and enhanced schedules, just in time for Thanksgiving celebrations.

Detroit People Mover Relaunches After Months of Renovations

Detroit People Mover

After months of closures for vital track upgrades, the Detroit People Mover is set to resume operations at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 27, with newly replaced rail infrastructure. The reopening marks the completion of a significant track improvement project aimed at enhancing safety, reliability, and service for the downtown transit system.

With final testing on November 25 and 26 ensuring the trains meet safety standards, the People Mover is poised to offer a smoother, more efficient ride for its thousands of daily passengers. The relaunch also features an expanded schedule and a celebratory atmosphere, coinciding with Thanksgiving holiday events in Detroit.

New Service Schedule and Free Fares Courtesy of Priority Waste

To mark its return, the People Mover is reintroducing free fares, sponsored by Priority Waste, and implementing an updated service schedule to accommodate a broader range of riders. The new permanent schedule is as follows:

  • Monday-Friday: 6:30 a.m. – Midnight
  • Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – Midnight
  • Sunday: 10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.

The revised hours aim to make public transportation more accessible for downtown commuters, eventgoers, and visitors exploring Detroit’s attractions.

Thanksgiving Events and What to Expect on Opening Day

The reopening comes just in time for one of Detroit’s busiest seasons. With Thanksgiving festivities such as the America’s Thanksgiving Parade and Detroit Lions’ annual game, the People Mover offers a convenient transportation option for navigating the city’s bustling downtown. Riders can expect improved performance, thanks to the replacement of nine critical curve sections of the rail, marking the third major track upgrade in the system’s 37-year history.

Looking Ahead: Future Maintenance Plans

While the People Mover is back in action for the holiday season, the system is already planning its next major maintenance effort. A complete closure is scheduled from September 3 to November 22, 2024, for preventive rail work. The project includes replacing sections of the rail that have been in service since the People Mover’s inception, ensuring continued safety and reliability for years to come.

Officials emphasize the importance of these routine closures, noting that full shutdowns are the most effective and efficient way to carry out essential maintenance. Despite these challenges, the People Mover remains a cornerstone of Detroit’s public transit infrastructure, offering a unique and vital service to residents and visitors alike.
