Convicted Felon Arrested After Dragging Trooper During Saginaw Traffic Stop – Video

A Saginaw Traffic stop turns violent as driver flees, dragging a trooper; suspect now faces multiple felony charges.

Trooper Dragged During Saginaw Traffic Stop

SAGINAW, Mich. — A routine traffic stop escalated into a dangerous incident Sunday night when a convicted felon dragged a state trooper with his vehicle for half a block before fleeing the scene. The Michigan State Police reported the incident last Tuesday

The incident began at approximately 8:20 p.m. on January 14, when Saginaw Secure Cities Partnership (SCP) troopers stopped a vehicle for defective equipment near S. Andre Street and Williams Street. As officers attempted to engage with the driver, the suspect suddenly accelerated, dragging a Tri-City Post trooper for several yards.

Fortunately, the trooper was able to free himself and was not injured during the ordeal.

Suspect Arrested Shortly After Incident

Following the dangerous encounter, authorities launched an immediate investigation in the area. Law enforcement advised residents to avoid the vicinity while they worked to track down the suspect.

Shortly thereafter, officers located the 31-year-old driver at his nearby residence. The man, whose name has not been released pending arraignment, was taken into custody without further incident.

The suspect, a convicted felon, was lodged in the Saginaw County Jail and now faces an array of serious charges, including:

  • Felonious assault
  • Fleeing and eluding
  • Possession of a firearm by a felon

Video Captures Harrowing Moment

A video of the incident, released by law enforcement, shows the moment the trooper was dragged by the suspect’s vehicle during the traffic stop. The footage highlights the risk faced by officers in routine interactions that can turn life-threatening in an instant.

Authorities have not confirmed whether additional charges may follow as the investigation continues.

Community Urged to Remain Vigilant

While the immediate danger has subsided, Michigan State Police have urged the public to exercise caution and avoid the area of S. Andre Street and Williams Street as investigators continue to process the scene.

This Saginaw traffic stop dragging incident serves as a reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily and the importance of community support in addressing crime. Police ask anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward.

What is the Saginaw Secure Cities Partnership (SCP)

The Secure Cities Partnership (SCP) is an initiative launched by the Michigan State Police (MSP) in 2012 as part of a broader effort to reduce violent crime in high-risk communities. The program, initiated under the leadership of Governor Rick Snyder, integrates enforcement, prevention, and economic opportunity to foster safer urban environments.

At its core, SCP focuses on collaboration among local, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to address spikes in violent crime. Initially implemented in Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, and Pontiac, the program has expanded to include other cities such as Benton Harbor, Muskegon Heights, and Lansing, bringing the total to 11 communities by 2017.

Key elements of the SCP include:

  1. Targeted Policing: Uniform troopers conduct directed patrols in high-crime areas. These efforts are supported by Major Case Units (MCUs) that investigate serious crimes such as homicides, shootings, and drug-related offenses.
  2. Civilian Crime Analysis: Embedded analysts use data-driven approaches to identify crime patterns and hot spots. Their evidence-based insights inform resource deployment and enhance investigative efforts.
  3. Community Outreach: Recognizing the importance of prevention, SCP emphasizes programs like the Community Action United Team in Our Neighborhoods (CAUTION), which engages faith-based leaders to mediate at tense crime scenes and improve police-community relations.

The initiative also leverages MSP resources like aviation, forensic science, and intelligence operations to amplify its impact. Since its inception, SCP has contributed to measurable declines in violent and property crime rates across participating cities, demonstrating the effectiveness of coordinated and data-informed law enforcement strategies.
