Coffee Cup DNA Leads to Justice in 25-Year-Old Michigan Rape Case

Forensic breakthrough with coffee cup DNA and victim’s courage bring closure to a decades-old case in Oakland County.

DNA Evidence Cracks Decades-Old Assault Case in Michigan

Kurt Rillema

PONTIAC, Mich. – Justice has finally been served in a 25-year-old rape case after Kurt Rillema, 52, of West Bloomfield, Michigan, was sentenced to 10–15 years in prison for the 1999 sexual assault of a young woman at Twin Lakes Golf Club in Oakland Township. Rillema, an “avid golfer,” was linked to the crime through advanced genetic genealogy testing, a breakthrough technology that matched his DNA to evidence collected at the scene.

Rillema pleaded no contest in December to charges of third- and fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct. His sentencing took place on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at Oakland County Circuit Court.

Forensic Genealogy: Coffee Cup DNA Was Game-Changer for Cold Case

The news site The Olympian noted the case was revived in 2021 when investigators used genetic genealogy to analyze DNA evidence from a separate 2000 assault at a Penn State golf course. That case, involving a 19-year-old victim, revealed a match to the 1999 Michigan assault. The DNA pointed to one of three brothers, ultimately leading detectives to Rillema.

Investigators trailed Rillema in January 2023 and collected DNA from a discarded Styrofoam coffee cup. The results confirmed that his DNA matched samples from both crime scenes.

“This arrest shows the power of modern forensic science and relentless investigation,” said Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard. “Without genetic genealogy, this monster might never have been identified.”

Victim’s Resilience Paves the Way for Justice

The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office consulted with the Michigan victim before agreeing to a plea deal. Prosecutor Karen McDonald emphasized the victim’s bravery throughout the legal process.

“Reliving this trauma after so many years wasn’t easy,” McDonald stated. “Her strength sustained this case, and I applaud the relentless work by law enforcement that allowed us to deliver a just ending for her.”

A Pattern of Violence Across States

The Olympian reported that Rillema’s crimes extended beyond Michigan. The 2000 Penn State golf course assault bore striking similarities to the Michigan attack. Both cases involved young women, remote golf course locations, and the use of force. Centre County, Pennsylvania authorities collaborated closely with Michigan officials to secure evidence against Rillema.

While Rillema had no prior criminal record, investigators said the assaults fit a clear and disturbing pattern.

“DNA evidence linked these cases, and the collaborative effort between states ensured justice was served,” said Centre County First Assistant District Attorney Sean McGraw.

Broader Implications for Cold Case Investigations

Rillema’s conviction underscores the growing role of forensic genealogy in solving cold cases. Law enforcement agencies can track suspects across jurisdictions by leveraging public DNA databases, breathing new life into long-dormant investigations.

The case also highlights the importance of victim advocacy in cold case resolution. Advocacy groups hope that stories like this will encourage other survivors to come forward, even years after an assault.
