Caught Red-Handed – 3 Time Caseville Burglar Found Sleeping in Victim’s Bed!

Police apprehend local resident for repeated home invasions, raising concerns about security in the Caseville area.

Repeat Offender Arrested in Caseville Break-Ins

Arrest

A Caseville man has been arrested and charged with multiple felonies following a series of home invasions, according to the Huron County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect, identified as 51-year-old Daniel J. Schmidt, was apprehended early Sunday morning when deputies discovered him unlawfully residing in a Birch Street vacation home. The arrest followed a month-long investigation into several incidents of breaking and entering in the Caseville area.

Deputy Chester Kowalski, who had initially responded to a reported break-in at the same residence the previous day, returned to the property around 6:30 a.m. to find an unsecured door. Joined by Deputy Alex Jobes, the officers entered the home and discovered Schmidt asleep in a bed. He was promptly taken into custody without incident.

Suspect Linked to Multiple Burglaries

Upon questioning, Schmidt admitted to breaking into the Birch Street property on three separate occasions over the past month. He also confessed to burglarizing another residence on Main Street approximately one month ago. The investigation has so far led to Schmidt being charged with three felony counts of breaking and entering, though additional charges may follow as authorities continue their inquiry.

Schmidt was arraigned on Monday and remains in custody at the Huron County Jail after failing to post bond. Sheriff Kelly Hanson indicated that the investigation is ongoing and urged the community to report suspicious activity in their neighborhoods.

Community Reactions and Broader Implications

The arrest has stirred concerns among Caseville residents, particularly those with seasonal or vacation homes, which are often targets for such crimes. Sheriff Hanson highlighted the importance of securing properties, especially during the off-season when vacant homes become vulnerable. Law enforcement officials are reminding property owners to install security measures such as surveillance cameras and robust locking systems.

This case also underscores the challenges rural communities face in addressing property crimes. With limited law enforcement resources, areas like Caseville rely heavily on community vigilance and prompt reporting to deter criminal activity.

Sheriff’s Office Encourages Public Vigilance

Sheriff Hanson emphasized that investigations into related incidents could lead to further developments. Residents are encouraged to contact the Huron County Sheriff’s Office if they have information relevant to this case or other suspicious activity in the region.

This arrest serves as a stark reminder for homeowners to remain vigilant and proactive about security measures, particularly in areas prone to seasonal population shifts.
