Quick-thinking bank tellers and law enforcement coordination foil a $2,800 fraud attempt.

Suspect Apprehended After Second Fraud Attempt in Bay Port

BAY PORT, Mich. — A Taylor, Michigan man is in custody after attempting to cash a fraudulent check at two Huron County bank branches on the morning of December 12, 2024. The suspect’s scam was thwarted by alert tellers and swift action by the Huron County Sheriff’s Office.

The 45-year-old suspect first attempted to cash a fraudulent check for over $2,800 at the Sebewaing branch of Bay Port State Bank. The check bore an address from a Pigeon business, which raised suspicions. When questioned by the teller, the man’s answers further aroused doubt, prompting a bank investigation that confirmed the check’s fraudulent nature. The suspect left the branch on foot, stating he needed to return to work, and bank staff alerted local financial institutions through the Huron County FIST (Financial Institution Support Team) network.

Fraudulent Check Presented Again in Bay Port

A short time later, the same suspect appeared at the Bay Port branch of Bay Port State Bank, attempting the same scheme. Prepared for his arrival, tellers contacted 911 and engaged the suspect until law enforcement arrived. The man tried to flee but was quickly detained by a deputy from the Huron County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect is believed to have had two accomplices who parked a block away but fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. Investigators are working to identify and locate these individuals.

Suspect in Custody with Lengthy Criminal History

The suspect was booked into the Huron County Jail on felony charges related to the fraudulent check attempts in Sebewaing and Bay Port. Sheriff Kelly Hanson confirmed the suspect has an extensive criminal record. He remains in custody and is expected to face formal charges and arraignment on December 13.

“This case demonstrates the importance of vigilant bank personnel and the strength of collaborative efforts between financial institutions and law enforcement,” said Sheriff Hanson. “Our investigation is ongoing as we work to identify and apprehend any accomplices.”

Investigation Continues

Authorities are urging anyone with information related to this incident or the suspect’s potential accomplices to contact the Huron County Sheriff’s Office.
