Alcohol suspected in M-62 crash in Cass County that leaves one hurt

Sheriff’s Office reports alcohol as a factor in a two-vehicle collision on M-62; investigation ongoing.


Crash on M-62 Sends One to Hospital, Alcohol Suspected

JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP, MI – A two-vehicle crash in Cass County early Saturday morning resulted in one injury, with alcohol suspected to have contributed to the incident.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff Clint Roach, responded to the crash at approximately 6:34 a.m. on January 25, near M-62 and Yankee Street in Jefferson Township.

Crash Details Released

According to investigators, Alonzo King Jr., 23, of Goshen, Indiana, was traveling northbound on M-62 when he lost control of his vehicle. King’s car veered off the roadway, struck a tree, and re-entered the roadway, coming to rest in the southbound lane.

Maxwell VanGoey, 26, of Vandalia, Michigan, was driving southbound on M-62 when he encountered King’s vehicle obstructing the road. VanGoey swerved to avoid a collision but left the roadway, landing in a ditch where his vehicle struck a tree.

Injuries and Assistance

King sustained injuries in the crash and was transported to Niles Lakeland Hospital by SMCAS Ambulance for treatment. VanGoey was evaluated on-site by EMS and released without hospitalization.

Authorities confirmed that all individuals involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts.

Alcohol Suspected

The Sheriff’s Office indicated that alcohol is believed to have played a role in the crash. Further investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances leading to the collision.

  • Ontwa/Edwardsburg Police Department
  • Edwardsburg Fire Department
  • Michigan State Police
