AG Nessel’s Fight Against AI: Can Michigan Voters Trust What They Hear?

Michigan’s Attorney General steps up efforts to guard elections against AI-fueled misinformation campaigns with new tools for voters.

Nessel’s Push for Voter Trust Amid Digital Threats

LANSING – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has launched a new webpage aimed at fighting election misinformation powered by artificial intelligence (AI). The initiative seeks to provide voters with practical tools to recognize AI-generated content and ensure access to reliable election-related resources.

AI, known for mimicking human-like speech and writing, has become a growing concern in the spread of false information. As its use has become more sophisticated, bad actors are employing AI to manipulate public opinion and disrupt voter participation. The new resource hub is designed to help Michigan residents stay one step ahead by educating them on identifying AI content and safeguarding their votes.

“While technology has made it easier than ever to access election information, the rise of AI has also made it easier for misinformation on these topics to spread,” Nessel said in a statement. “To help protect voters from misinformation, this comprehensive guide is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure everyone can confidently navigate the digital landscape and stay informed with the facts they need to make their voices heard.”

Task Force Flags AI Scam Targeting Voters

The webpage launch follows a string of high-profile incidents in which AI was weaponized for election interference. Earlier this year, the Attorney General and her colleagues from the Anti-Robocall Multistate Litigation Task Force issued a warning about fraudulent robocalls targeting New Hampshire residents. These calls reportedly used AI-generated voices mimicking President Joe Biden to discourage voters from participating in the state’s primary election.

Michigan’s new webpage offers tips on identifying suspicious AI-generated materials, such as unusual phrasing, inconsistent facts, or synthesized voices, which can be difficult for voters to distinguish from genuine sources.

The Protecting Michigan Voters from AI-Generated Election Misinformation page is now available on the Department of Attorney General’s website, providing direct links to verified election resources to ensure accurate and timely information is accessible throughout the voting process.

Broader Trends in AI and Election Security

The introduction of this webpage reflects a growing national trend as state officials and watchdog organizations brace for the impact of AI-driven disinformation during the 2024 election cycle. Michigan is not alone in grappling with the challenges posed by emerging technologies. Lawmakers across the U.S. are debating stricter regulations on AI’s role in political communications, while tech companies face mounting pressure to introduce transparency tools to identify AI-generated content.

With voter trust at an all-time low in many regions, campaigns like Nessel’s underscore the importance of proactive measures to protect the democratic process. As elections become more entangled with digital technologies, Michigan voters must stay vigilant against attempts to sway public opinion with manipulated media.
