Theodore Roethke, one of the most accomplished poets of his time, bagged the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1954 with his book “The Waking”. Born to a German immigrant in Saginaw, Michigan, Roethke’s birthplace is marked with a Michigan Historical Marker.

Here’s a little about Roethke: “The greenhouse “is my symbol for the whole of life, a womb, a heaven-on-earth.” Working in his family’s floral company in Saginaw shaped his worldview and his poetry. From 1941, beginning with “Open House”, he published extensively, winning a Pulitzer Prize and two National Book Awards among other accolades. In 1959, he was awarded the Bollingen Prize by Pennsylvania University. Roethke taught at several colleges before joining the University of Washington at Seattle in 1947. He passed away in 1963 and his remains rest in Saginaw’s Oakwood Cemetery.”
