Lansing’s downtown has a hidden gem: Cooley Gardens & Scott Sunken Gardens. This public park is a serene green space filled with trees, plants, and flowers, and it’s got a lot of history to boot. It’s a favorite spot for wedding photographers, but it’s also a great place to just sit and enjoy nature.
The park is located on the north side of the Grand River, tucked between the GM Lansing Grand River Assembly plant and the Board of Water & Light’s central substation. It’s also near the Michigan Women’s Historical Center and Hall of Fame. The address is 125 W. Malcolm X Street, at the corner of Malcolm X and S. Washington Ave. The park is home to a number of historical plaques that tell the story of Lansing’s past.
The park, owned by the City of Lansing, is home to two gardens – Cooley Gardens and Scott Sunken Gardens. You can visit for free, but if you want to get married there, you’ll need to pay a reservation fee.
Cooley Gardens was first planted nearly a century ago and has since been lovingly maintained. It’s got a pavilion, park benches, picnic tables, and archways – perfect for photographers looking for a beautiful backdrop. And for those with a green thumb, there’s a wide variety of plants to admire.
The park is also home to the annual “Rosé All Day” wine festival, hosted by the Greater Lansing Convention and Visitors Bureau. This year, it’s happening on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 11 am to 4 pm.
Scott Sunken Gardens, the other garden in the park, was built in 1934 by Richard H. Scott, former president of REO Motor Car Company. It was originally located on the corner of Malcolm X St. and S. Washington Ave., but it was moved to its current location in 2018. It’s a unique and photogenic spot that’s definitely worth a visit.
The gardens are a popular spot for weddings, thanks to their unique, scenic, and intimate setting. If you’re interested in booking a wedding, you can contact Lansing’s Parks and Recreation Department.
