We’re continuing our series inspired by Catherine Beeman, a fellow blogger, avid reader, and seasoned bookseller. This past spring and summer, we’ve been featuring her Michigan Monday series, and this week we’re focusing on crime writer and author, Steve Hamilton.
Hamilton is a true Michigan native, born in Detroit and educated at Lakeland High School and the University of Michigan. The majority of his crime and mystery novels are set in the Upper Peninsula town of Paradise.
Our featured Michigan author this week is none other than Steve Hamilton. Hamilton has received major acclaim for his mystery writing, having won prestigious Edgar awards for both Best First Novel and Best Novel – a feat only achieved by one other writer. The New York Times has recognized his Alex McKnight series as notable books and he has even placed two recent titles on the New York Times bestseller list. I was so engrossed in his work that I was willing to pay someone to write my dissertation just so I could spend more time reading his work!
Hamilton’s main character, Alex McKnight, is an ex-cop making a living by renting out cabins in Paradise, a town in Michigan’s UP near Lake Superior’s Whitefish Point. However, circumstances and crime pull him back into the world of crime-fighting, albeit as a reluctant private detective.
