10 Epic Reasons Your Next Adventure Must Start on Port Crescent’s Steel Bridge Trail & End at the Dark Sky Tavern

So, we were just looking for something fun to do earlier in the day and thought we’d see what was going on at the old steel bridge at Port Crescent State Park. We noticed new decking on the bridge and thought we’d take a stroll around the old lumbering town of Port Crescent. We walked along the Steel Bridge Trail, enjoying the cool breeze and the views from the high overlook and cliff along the Pinnebog River. After our walk, we decided to grab a bite at the Dark Sky Tavern & Lodge nearby.

The old steel bridge at Port Crescent State Park is a sight to see. The Department of Natural Resources has been working on it for about a month and the fresh new decking they installed looks great. We noticed a group of young people setting up new railings along the sides of the bridge – the old ones were pretty beat up and had sharp spots. The bridge is a fine example of a Michigan truss bridge and it’s the trailhead entrance to the Steel Bridge Trail.

We decided to explore the trail and found ourselves in the woods. We noticed other people with beach toys and a lot of kayakers on the Pinnebog River. We also saw a huge pine tree that had fallen over due to a recent storm. It blocked part of the trail but we managed to step over it and continue our walk.

Towards the end of the trail, we had to make a decision – to go to the beach area near the campgrounds or turn back and continue the trail in the woods. We chose the latter as the campgrounds were being renovated and there was a lot of construction material around. We didn’t want that to ruin our walk.

While walking in the woods, we noticed some squirrels and black raspberry bushes. We also saw some old growth Oaks and evidence of a fire or perhaps a lightning strike. According to our smartphones, we had walked over a mile and a half – about the same distance as the Golden Gate Bridge.

After our walk, we decided to check out the Dark Sky Lodge & Tavern. We hadn’t been there in a while and noticed that they had revamped their menu. We split a sandwich and had a light beer for lunch. It was delicious and we’re looking forward to going back.

In summary, we had a fantastic day exploring the old steel bridge and the Steel Bridge Trail at Port Crescent State Park. We enjoyed the cool breeze, the views from the high overlook and cliff, and the wildlife in the woods. We also had a delicious lunch at the Dark Sky Tavern & Lodge. It was a great, cheap date and we’re looking forward to doing it again.
