10 Epic Fails from Michigan’s Viral Clear Ice Walk on Lake Huron – A Not-So-Chill Throwback!

Did you see that incredible clear ice walk video from Lake Huron? Thanks to sub-zero temperatures and the lake’s clear water, Gary Johnson was able to capture a unique experience on Saginaw Bay back in 2015. He simply took a stroll on the ice near Greenbush, Michigan, and filmed it with his phone. The video quickly went viral, racking up 80,000 views in just three days, and now has over 187,000 views!

The video gives us a glimpse of Lake Huron frozen clear to the surface, with the rocks in the sand visible below the ice. Greenbush, by the way, is up north of East Tawas and about 200 miles north of Detroit in Michigan’s northern lower peninsula.

Ever wondered how clear ice like this forms on the Great Lakes? It’s actually quite rare and requires the water to freeze very slowly. This allows impurities and air bubbles to sink or rise to the surface, and larger ice crystals to form, which scatter less light. If the water is settled with very little silt or other impurities, then there’s a chance of forming clear ice. This phenomenon is more common in inland lakes.

But remember, taking a clear ice walk isn’t without risks. Even for experienced outdoorsmen, walking, fishing, or snowmobiling on frozen lakes can be dangerous. We’ve done some research and found a great guide on ice safety and even how to survive if you fall through the ice when you’re alone. Check out our post on How to Survive Falling Through the Ice.

This phenomenon, although common in inland lakes, is seldom seen in the Great Lakes. However, remember to always prioritize safety when venturing onto frozen lakes.
