$1.5M Cocaine Bust on I-94 in Berrien County – 22yo Canadian Held

Berrien County deputies recover over 120 pounds of cocaine during a routine traffic stop, uncovering a major drug operation.

Routine Stop Leads to Major Drug Bust on I-94

WSBT reported yesterday that a traffic stop on Interstate 94 in Berrien County on November 18 led to the seizure of more than 120 pounds of cocaine, valued at approximately $1.5 million. The incident highlights the ongoing efforts of Michigan law enforcement to combat drug trafficking along key transportation corridors.

Deputies from the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office acted on a tip about narcotics being transported through the area. They stopped a Freightliner tractor-trailer near mile marker 34 eastbound for a traffic violation, leading to the discovery of 50 kilograms of cocaine during a search of the truck and its trailer.

Suspect in Custody as Investigation Expands

The driver, identified as Sukhraj Singh, a 22-year-old Canadian resident, was arrested and is currently being held at the Berrien County Jail pending charges. Singh’s connection to the operation remains under investigation, and authorities have not disclosed additional details about the drug’s source or intended destination.

Law enforcement agencies, including Michigan State Police’s Southwest Enforcement Team and Berrien County Centralized Dispatch, assisted in the operation, signaling a coordinated response to large-scale drug trafficking in the region.

Community and Law Enforcement React

The street value of the seized cocaine underscores the scale of the operation, with officials estimating its worth at $1.5 million. The bust not only removes a significant quantity of illegal drugs from circulation but also disrupts a potentially far-reaching trafficking network.

Berrien County Sheriff’s Office spokespersons commended the collaborative efforts that led to the seizure. “This is a major success in keeping dangerous narcotics off our streets and ensuring the safety of our community,” an official said.

Residents of Berrien County and surrounding areas have expressed concerns about the frequent use of I-94 as a drug trafficking route. The interstate, a key artery between Chicago and Detroit, has been a focal point for law enforcement operations aimed at intercepting illegal substances.

Interstate Drug Trafficking in Focus

This latest seizure is one of several high-profile drug busts in Michigan this year, as state and local authorities ramp up efforts to address trafficking along major highways. Interstate 94, in particular, has been a hotspot due to its strategic location linking major urban centers.

Law enforcement agencies urge the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity. As investigations into the operation continue, the role of community tips in facilitating law enforcement actions remains critical.
